Diana's Studio

It amazes me how creative weavers are when it comes to finding places to weave.  Those of us who have a dedicated space are very fortunate.  I keep trying to remind myself of how lucky I am as I drag out yarn from bins or boxes stuffed in closets or under piles of other yarns. 

Diana's weaving space is neat and full of light. She has a large window to bring in light and enough room for her loom and other weaving equipment.

The piece on the loom is yardage that Diana is making for a collaboration with a friend.  They plan to make quilted lap robes for the Holiday Cheer project. 

Having a warping board at a good height is really essential for comfortable warp winding.  I love electric bobbin winders - they really make that job faster.

This handy piece of equipment was made by Diana's husband to store unused heddles.  What a great idea to keep the metal heddles from being tangled or bent!

His and Her Weaving

Beryl and Igor hosted the August meeting of the Not 2 Squares a their home.  We met in the well-lit center of their house surrounded by their weaving equipment and projects.  They each have their own loom/work area on the main level.  There is a lot of light in this area - and a great view.

The couple are both accomplished inkle loom weavers. 

 On another level, Beryl has her AVL loom.  This is a dobby/computer controlled loom with 24 shafts.  This is where Beryl create many of her lovely and unique shawls and yardage. 

 This is also the stash room.  It looks like it would be a good place to shop for yarn...  Hmmmm

Betsy's Weaving Area

The June meeting was hosted at Betsy's home in the woods. A very nice and cosy place. So too is her weaving space. There is lots of light.

 Betsy makes colorful shawls and other items.  I ran into her at the Farmer's Market on Saturday and got a preview of a newly woven shawl.  Very nice.  I hope she'll be at the July meeting to show it off.

Marcy's Weaving Space

Last month we met at Marcy's. Great sharing and delicious cookies. 

    

 

Marcy is lucky enough to have a room dedicated to her weaving.  She's got a nice floor loom and accessories.   Although I think she needs more yarn in her stash.

   Marcy shared two pieces she wove as dresser scarves for her husband.  The patterns she used for the herringbone runner (second one shown below) are on pages 34 & 35 of Anne Dixon's book, The Handweaver's Pattern Directory . Horizontal herringbone, Broken 2/2 twill and Hopsack.

   

Ingrid's Studio

The group met at my house last month and I've been remiss in posting pictures of my studio.  This is probably do the fact that it was a bit of a mess.  It's not a whole lot better, but much more presentable.  I have enough room for a couple of looms, plus a stationary bike and weigh machine.  Overall a great place to create.

I share the space with my husband, Warren who is a watercolor painter.  I solved the perennial problem of where to put the warping board.  When I can, I use his easel. 

A Tour of Gus' Studio

One of the great things about our meetings is that we get together in each other's homes.  So, in addition to sharing what we are working on; brainstorming weaving problems; and stretching our brains around group challenges, we can see the spaces we use for our weaving.  Each person's area is unique. Many of our group have the luxury of a dedicated room or area for weaving.

Gus has a combination guest bedroom and weaving studio. Sometime the weaving takes over and when guests arrive she has to do some shifting to find the bed.

Gus is working on lap blankets for the Holiday Cheer project for this coming December.  These will be two blankets. The first is already finished.  The warp is cotton and the weft is a verigated chenille. It is fairly fine (see detail in picture below).




(If I was a good note taker like Beryl, I would have remembered more about this piece.) 

It does look pretty nice.  Gus used some slub cotton for the yellow stripes.  That yarn turned out to be not strong enough for warp yarn.  She paired it with a perl cotton thread and it worked great.

Gus is VERY organized.  Nice storage, well labeled.  Hmmm, maybe she can help me with my organization.  She's pretty creative.  She has an unused chest freezer in the garage that she used to store roving.

She obviously can find what she's looking for quickly.

It is always nice to have company while weaving.  I'm not sure how much time Carl spends helping Gus, but I'm sure he's good company.  This rug is an example of the many woven items in Gus' Studio.
